Shorewood History
|
Shorewood was first settled in the 1830s as "Troy", taking it's name from Troy, New York, from where the first settlers came. Initial developments were a sawmill, grist mill, knitting mill and sheep farms. The area became a small fishing and resort community, and was eventually subdivided in 1926 to provide lots for summer cottages of nearby Joliet and Chicago residents. The Shorewood Beach Improvement Association was formed in 1931 in order to oversee community development and improve infrastructure and other features. Eventually this group filed for incorporation as The Village of Shorewood which was finalized in November of 1957 with 177 voting residents and a population of 358. Now home to over 10,000, the Village is planning for continued growth while staying aligned with the needs of the residents.
